About Nigunim Festival
Nigunim, a new festival of creative Jewish Music was created by Guitarists Oren Neiman and Koby Hayon. The purpose of the festival is to provide Westchester with an annual series of quality improvisationally based performances that explore the different facets of Jewish traditional, Jewish Diaspora, and modern Israeli music.

The 2011 festival will feature 3 different performances in three different venues, each of which will explore a different aspect of this concept, and all of which will show together the wide variety of sounds available in this framework. The festival provides a stage for a genre of music that has no consistent stage in Westchester, despite its large Jewish and Israeli population.

The word “Nigun”, is a Hebrew word for a melody without words (“Nigunim” is many melodies). In the traditional world this usually referred to melodies taken from religious ceremony used to put the congregation in a “Prayerful” place mentally. We strive to take this concept, and apply it in a modern context.

Isra-alien

Isra-Alien is a band with innovative compositions and imaginative arrangements - deeply rooted in Israel's diverse musical traditions. The result is a unique fusing of a myriad of influences (Greek, Balkan, Eastern-European, and Jewish/Klezmer), with daring improvisations and inventive textures, showcasing both guitarists’ musical worlds.

Pete Malinverni, who is the musical director at Westchester Reform Temple, will present a special evening of solo piano music inspired by Jewish themes and spirituals. Malinverni is an accomplished jazz pianist who Stuart Troup, in a feature article in the New York Newsday has called “A supple player, full of Nuance”. Pete has released six critically acclaimed recordings as a leader, and is also a long time faculty member at SUNY Purchase’s prestigious Jazz program.

Trio Shalva

Trio Shalva introduces an exotic fusion of jazz innovation and Israeli heritage in their debut album "Riding Alone". The trio repertoire includes original compositions as well as arrangements of traditional Israeli repertoire. It only took one show for Assaf, Koby & Nadav to understand the serendipitous connection that was underway. In result, the three musicians moved forward as Trio Shalva, choosing the name for its representation of the Hebrew word for “serenity”.
